I’ve recently been doing what I think of as ‘creative workouts’. These are quick pieces (paintings, choreography, bits of writing etc.) that are designed to exercise my creative muscles. This is my process for these exercises. I begin with a meditation. This can be physical as well.
BLIND SKETCH / IMPROV
Whatever image comes up during the meditation I quickly sketch (with my eyes closed). If it’s a movement, I’ll play with that for a bit. Again, with eyes closed.
FORM
Next, I do a quick sketch (eyes open) that expands on the idea from the blind sketch. I might also do a physical ‘sketch’ if I’m playing with choreography, or a paragraph of writing. As you can see, I haven’t really considered where the image sits on the page – and the colour is thrown down – purely as a reference.
