UK Film Review : ‘Pride’

6 October 2014

‘Pride’ is a film that is really hard not to love. Like a small, perfectly formed teddy bear, it’s soft and cuddly with just the right amount of truth and justice to make for compelling viewing. The film is based on a true story about a lesbian/gay group’s support of the 80’s Miners’ Strike (Lesbians […]

Walking on Sunshine Reviews

25 June 2014

Another good review for WOS that mentions the choreography.  The reviewer considers ‘How Will I Know’ to be one of the best numbers. Funny considering that this song originally didn’t have any choreography in it!  I always meant for this number to be deliberately ridiculous so the following quote is appropriate! “one of the films […]

Bright Moments

24 August 2012

The new album NATIVES by Bright Moments (aka Kelly Pratt, of Beirut and Arcade Fire fame) is so unbelievably awesome I can say little more than waaaaa. Aside from maybe two or three meh tracks, all the others are corkers. Therefore I order everyone to go and buy it, now.

New Years Movie Mayhem

7 January 2012

Here’s my round-up of this past year’s best films, by category, as invented by moi, which is fine, since all categories are constructs anyway! BEST DANCE MOVIE ‘Pina’ (see my review HERE) BEST DANCE MOVIE – Honourable Mention PUSS IN BOOTS. PIB isn’t really a dance movie, but it does have a few dance sequences […]

Moneyball, Margin Call and Melancholia…or (it’s the end of the world as we know it)

3 January 2012

Yes, yes, my penchant for alliteration continues unabated into the new year…. And yes, all three of the aforementioned films have titles that begin with the letter ‘M’, but they also share an exploration of the end of worlds, both metaphorically (Moneyball and Margin Call) and literally (Melancholia). MONEYBALL (one of the year’s best films […]

US V. UK X-Factor Face Off

18 October 2011

I’m in a light mood this month, partly because I love autumn and partly because I’m finally getting enough vitamin D. As I’m both American and British, I thought I’d compare and contrast this year’s bi-continental X-Factors. I’ve made it a point to catch both (purely as research for this blog obviously…ahem…) Anyhoo, let us […]

Bridesmaids: A Game Changer?

7 July 2011

In my book, there are a few things that mark a film out as a game changer. Genre mashes or twists. Innovation in film making. Elevated usage of new technology, and a unique approach to narrative. However, the recent film Bridesmaids is a game changer for me not because of style or genre or unique […]

Queen Bey- by Nikki Trow

6 June 2011

Okay, did anyone see Beyonce at the Billboard Awards? If so, you were in for a treat, ’cause she was a-maz-ing! Head and shoulders (and possibly torso) above most other pop stars. Her great vocals don’t falter whilst dancing. And when I say dancing….I don’t mean bustin out a few sexy moves….I mean DANCING, and […]

Pina (the film)

27 May 2011

After a hectic period of work, I finally had a chance to see the Wim Wender’s film PINA. Firstly, I should preface this review with the caveat that I L-O-V-E Pina Bausch, and no other choreographer (apart from Philippe Decoufle) holds a more special place in my heart. Secondly, I can’t really see 3D very […]

Attack the Block

23 May 2011

I just saw the excellent new film Attack the Block, written and directed by up and comer Joe Cornish of Adam and Joe Show fame. Lighter on comedy and heavier on action then I was expecting, Attack the Block is really a redemption story with a touch of British Social Drama.
